Hello Parents,

The fifth grade class will be contributing a “Beauty Basket” to be auctioned off on February 25th. What I am requesting of each student’s family is $3 so that I may purchase the final items to complete the basket OR something that your family would like to contribute to the basket. This will definitely be a hot item that will include spa treatments, hair care products, and more! If possible, please send in $3 by Friday, February 17th. Please only send cash. Thanks so much for your help! See you at the Talent Show and Auction!

Explorer Project

This is your task this week...

YOU ARE AN EXPLORER... Your mission is to document and observe the world around you as if you’ve never seen it before. Take notes. Collect things you find on your travels. Document your findings. Notice patterns. Copy. Trace. Focus on one thing at a time. Record what you are drawn to.

You can take this project in any direction you choose. Explorers use what they see around them to generate new ideas, reach new conclusions, and achieve things that would have never been possible otherwise... What will being an explorer teach you?

Hi all,
We have been very busy this month! You all did great on your book reports this week. We had the priviledge of having a cotillion come teach us how to dine right during our Christmas Luncheon today... what a unique experience for everyone. It has been great to celebrate this special time of the year with you! I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday break!

Second Quarter

Hi all,
I want to thank each of you who were able to make it to fall conferences. It was nice to meet and talk about your wonderful kiddos! We have had a busy couple of weeks and as I am sure you know the big excitement was winning the Can-O-Lantern challenge this past week. Wow! Great job this week fifth graders! I know that you are ready for a weekend, but I just wanted to first remind you of a few things. Please remember that you should expect spelling assignments each week due on Friday, a math assignment each night as well as 20-30 min. nightly reading. You have done a great job getting your Maniac Magee questions done this week as well. Make sure that you are taking advantage of study hall time so you are not feeling overwhelmed when you get home at night! :)

Back in the Swing of Things

Well, we are entering our third week of school and have a lot going on in fifth grade! Here is your update for this four day week of school... By Thursday, please talk to your parents about 9/11. Where were they when they heard the news? Did it impact your family directly? You will be surprised what you discover. We will be discussing this important date in history on Thursday. Come ready to learn! You will have Saxon and Singapore for math homework this week as well as spelling homework due Friday. Let's have another great week!

WHAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO...

Last week we started our Social Studies unit on the American Revolution. Right now, students are working on an assignment that outlines the most important concepts related to the Revolution.

Students are also learning more about the writing process and all of the different types of writing that are out there. Ask your child to share their latest writing assignments with you!

We just started Singapore math assignments a couple times a week. This program is a great approach to teaching students to solve problems in many different ways by breaking down a problem into parts. Also, your child is being stretched to explain their reasoning for the way that they are solving problems.

Reminder...Practice, Practice, Practice
Please make sure that you are taking advantage of the practice that is available on Apangea. Also, please be sure that you are practicing your mad minutes for a minimum of five minutes each night AND last but not least please be filling out your reading log each night! :)

Apangea Math

There is a lot going on in our class lately. First, we were all trained on Apangea math online this week! This is an AWESOME website for you to put your math skills to work! Make sure that you are taking advantage of this opportunity!!!

State Projects

You all worked very hard on your state projects. Students have been walking through the research process to learn more about their chosen state. Congrats to the "Top 8" students in our class: Kristen, Kevin, Emily, Cami, Megan, Rachel, Lucy and Emma. Your classmates chose you for your QUALITY work. Way to go! (Check out their posters below)

Last, but certainly not least.... Season of Wishes

I am so very pleased with the eagerness I have seen out of EVERY student to give during this holiday season. As a class, we have decided to do a "Penny War" in our class. The money that we raise will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation. For those who do not know, this foundation provides children with life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to have their "wish" come true.

This hits very close to home in our class as one classmate, Emily, has been able to have her wish granted by this wonderful foundation. She is definitely our inspiration for giving these next few weeks! I am so proud of ALL of you for your caring spirits and generosity! Learn more about Make-A-Wish at: http://www.idaho.wish.org/

Also, don't forget that we will be collecting canned food for the Idaho Food Bank through the week before Christmas break as well.
